John Coleman
As a child growing up in Manhattan Beach, California, John was surrounded by art. Visits to the Laguna Beach art galleries with his mother was a common occurrence. Andrew Wyeth prints and other favorites of his mother graced his bedroom walls. “I don’t remember a time when art wasn’t the center of my world” John said.
By the time John entered high school, it was clear that art studies were his main interest and his art teacher made special arrangements so that he could spend more time in art classes than any other. During this time, he also attended Chouinard and did work for a Hollywood hairstylist doing portraits of some of his celebrity clientele.
John and Sue were married as teenagers and spent more than 20 years raising two daughters and creating several small businesses. It was more than 30 years ago that John committed full-time to his first passion, or what he calls visual poetry. His first creations were sculptures and later included paintings and drawings depicting history or what John refers to as American Mythology.
2001 was the year John received the invitation to join the Cowboy Artists of America and soon after became a Fellow member of the National Sculpture Society. His most recent endeavor has been the completion of his book “Spirit – Lives – Legends”.
